Gita Gopinath, the deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be stepping down at the end of August after deciding to return to academic roots.

Usually, the IMF's top deputy is nominated by the US and appointed by the former's managing director. The IMF, in a statement, said managing director Kristalina Georgieva would name Gopinath's successor in "due course".
