The Gurugram-based position, which gained widespread attention on social media, requires candidates to pay a Rs 20 lakh fee and forego a salary for the first year. Instead, Zomato promised to donate Rs 50 lakh—equivalent to the typical first-year salary for such a role—to a charity chosen by the selected candidate. Starting from the second year, the successful applicant would receive a competitive salary of over Rs 50 lakh annually.

While Goyal described the opportunity as ideal for individuals driven by purpose, the announcement faced a storm of criticism online. 

However, he mentioned there were a mix of well-thought through applications, between 'those who have all the money', 'those who have some of the money,' 'those who say they don't have the money,' and the ones 'who really don't have the money.'

This proposed law, described as one of the toughest of its kind globally, includes hefty lines of up to A$49.5 million ($32 million) for social media platforms that fail to comply with age-verification requirements.

The bill proposes a trial of an age-verification system, which could include biometric data or government identification, to ensure that children cannot bypass the age restrictions. The measures are among the most stringent controls any country has ever proposed, with no exemptions for parental consent or pre-existing accounts.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese heralded the legislation as a landmark reform, emphasizing that while some children may still find ways around the rules, the government was sending a strong message to social media companies to "clean up their act."

The law would directly impact major platforms such as Meta's Instagram and Facebook, Bytedance’s TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Snapchat. Despite these concerns, Albanese reassured the public that children would still have access to messaging, online gaming, and educational services, including mental health platforms like Headspace and Google Classroom.

In a similar move, France has previously proposed a ban on social media for those under 15, but with allowances for parental consent. In the United States, technology companies are required to seek parental approval for children under 13 to access their data. However, Australia’s policy stands out due to its higher age limit and strict enforcement measures.

While another commented, "Mind you, he will get 1000s of applications for this role. The more I think about it, the more I like it."

Critics also flagged the financial burden this model could place on young professionals. One comment read, “Bad idea. If the person isn’t the right fit, they lose money and gain nothing but a bitter experience. Young people need money, not the afterglow of charity.”

Another user expressed skepticism about the long-term viability, writing, “Leaving compensation from year two vague is unfair to say the least.”

Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh recently transformed a government directive into a branding boon for Coca-Cola during his Hyderabad concert of his Dil-Luminati Tour, according to reports.

In response to a Telangana state directive prohibiting songs promoting alcohol, drugs, or violence, Diljit creatively tweaked his lyrics, swapping mentions of "daaru" (alcohol) with "Coke."

The lyric changes had the audience and social media buzzing. Videos of the performance show Diljit grinning as he crooned his Coke-themed verses, with the crowd cheering in approval.

The highlight of the night came during his performance of the song Pehle Lalkare, where Diljit altered the line “Dooja kamm bottlaan de datt pattne” to “Dooja kamm Coke de datt pattne.” The playful lyric switch not only entertained fans but also generated organic buzz for Coca-Cola.

On an another interesting note, A video from Diljit's Ahmedabad concert has gone viral, showing the singer stopping mid-performance to acknowledge fans watching from hotel balconies. Diljit Dosanjh turns song lyrics into Coca-Cola gold during the Hyderabad leg of his Dilluminati tour

The state government of Goa has implemented its Social Media Influencer Policy, under which content creators can earn approximately Rs 50,000 for producing a single audiovisual piece for the government. However, the policy is being criticized for the government’s failure to conduct stakeholder consultations prior to its implementation.

In response to a Right to Information (RTI) query submitted by a member of the Internet Freedom Foundation, the Department of Information & Publicity disclosed that the Goa government allocated Rs 20,85,237 for developing empanelment software and Rs 1,41,35,000 for project execution. A copy of the response is with Storyboard18.

Actual expenses for the development and implementation of the empanelment software totaled ₹11,21,000, while the project’s execution costs amounted to Rs 3,56,000.

The RTI response further revealed that no consultations were held with stakeholders, other ministries, or departments during the drafting or finalization of the policy.

The Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), the nodal agency responsible for hosting the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), will utilize the services of social media influencers to promote government schemes, policies, and programs. The ESG will heavily utilize social media influencers to promote IFFI on multiple platforms. 

Contracts with social media influencers will initially last for one year and may be extended for up to two additional years based on satisfactory performance. Influencers' performance will be reviewed every six months.

<strong>The remuneration for influencers is divided into four categories based on their follower count:</strong>

Grade A: 100,000+ followers/subscribers
Grade B: 50,000–99,999 followers/subscribers
Grade C: 25,000–49,999 followers/subscribers
Grade D: 10,000–24,999 followers/subscribers

Influencers must maintain an active presence on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, or X (formerly Twitter) for at least one year. According to the RTI, applicants must also have at least 60 posts in the past six months and be residents of Goa. Additionally, all content must be approved by the nodal agency before publication, and the government will retain ownership of the content.

<strong>Remuneration for influencers varies as follows:</strong>

Posting graphics provided by the nodal agency: Rs2,000 to Rs500 (Grades A to D)
Posting audiovisuals provided by the nodal agency: Rs4,000 to Rs1,500 (Grades A to D)
Creating and posting audiovisuals: Rs50,000 to Rs10,000

The Uttar Pradesh government was the first to introduce a Social Media Policy, followed by the Karnataka government’s Digital Advertising Guidelines 2024. Both policies offer similar benefits to influencers. Consequently, influencer marketing agencies and content creators are advocating for comparable pay models in other states, including Maharashtra.

Under Uttar Pradesh’s Social Media Policy 2024, the government has appointed a digital agency, V-Form, to manage advertisements, including videos, tweets, posts, and reels. The policy sets the following maximum monthly payment limits for influencers on various platforms:

X (formerly Twitter): Rs5 lakh
Facebook: Rs4 lakh
Instagram: Rs3 lakh
YouTube: Rs8 lakh for videos, Rs7 lakh for shorts, Rs6 lakh for podcasts, and Rs4 lakh for other content.

The IEC (information, education, and communication) cell of the state department of health, medical education, and family welfare of Jharkhand government roped in influencers to spread awareness on Health schemes such as ‘Ayushman Bharat’ and ‘Mukhyamantri Gambhir Bimari Upchar Yojana’. 

With multiple state government implementing Social Media Influencer policies, experts believe that striking a balance between leveraging influencers for outreach and maintaining ethical standards is crucial. While these policies offer lucrative opportunities for content creators, they also raise concerns about transparency, stakeholder involvement, and content ownership.

The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, speaking at an event organized by the Press Council of India, expressed concerns about fake news, algorithmic bias, artificial intelligence, and the need for fair compensation from Big Tech companies. Ashwini Vaishnaw also suggested reconsidering the ‘Safe Harbor’ provision, which shields social media intermediaries.

Vaishnaw highlighted that platforms fail to verify the accuracy of the information shared online, leading to a flood of “false and misleading information.” He urged online platforms and Big Tech to take a more active role in combating misinformation and safeguarding democracy.

“The rapid spread of fake news is a big threat not only to the media because it undermines trust but it’s also a big threat to democracy,” he said.

Vaishnaw proposed re-evaluating the ‘Safe Harbor’ provision, which shields social media companies like Meta, X, and Telegram from being held liable for user-generated content. He argued that the provision, designed in the 1990s, may be outdated considering the vast influence of digital platforms today.

“With our diverse society, we have to be extra careful. Our country has many sensitivities which do not exist in the countries where these platforms originate. Therefore, if the circumstances are different, shouldn’t there be different metrics for the platforms? Shouldn’t there be more responsibility on the platforms?” he questioned.

Currently, Section 79 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, grants big tech platforms immunity from legal action over user-posted content. Removing or modifying the ‘Safe Harbor’ clause would hold these platforms directly accountable for such content, eliminating their legal protection.

Vaishnaw cautioned that the algorithms used by digital platforms often prioritize engagement by promoting sensational or divisive content. This trend, he claimed, poses significant risks to society and requires solutions that balance engagement with ethical practices.

“In a country as diverse as India, misinformation and such algorithmic bias can have serious social consequences, as we’ve witnessed in several instances. This approach, in my opinion, is irresponsible and dangerous for our society,” he stated.

As news consumption increasingly shifts to digital platforms, traditional media outlets are facing financial challenges, Vaishnaw noted. He called for fair compensation to bridge the economic gap between traditional and digital media.

“The efforts made by conventional media in creating content need to be fairly and suitably compensated,” he said.

On the topic of artificial intelligence, Vaishnaw raised concerns about its ethical and economic impacts, particularly regarding AI-generated content.

“AI models today can generate creative content based on vast datasets they are trained on. But what happens to the rights and recognition of the original creators who contributed to that data? Are they being compensated or acknowledged for their work? This is not just an economic issue; it is an ethical one too,” he remarked.

He urged all stakeholders to set aside political differences and engage in open discussions and collaborative efforts to address these pressing challenges.

However, instead of evoking holiday cheer, the ad has been slammed as "creepy," "soulless," and "dystopian" by social media users.

The 15-second commercial, produced using Coca-Cola's proprietary "Real Magic AI" software, features entirely AI-generated visuals, including a convoy of festive Coca-Cola trucks arriving in a picturesque, snow-laden town.

Another criticized the lack of human artistry, writing, “Coca-Cola has always been about the magic of Christmas. You killed this magic.”

The sentiment echoed on YouTube, where one viewer called the ad “AI-generated slop” and urged Coca-Cola to reconsider its approach, stating, “Real magic is firing your advertising team for Christmas.” Another comment read, “Sad to see this was made with AI. It feels like the soul of Christmas is missing.”

On the other hand, some supported the ideology and tagged it as a new era in advertising. One user highlighted, "Probably a fraction of the cost, it is what it is. In the future, 'human made' items will be an expensive niche market."

“100% game changer. A lot of naysayers and a lot of negative people out there in social land… but the truth is AI is not a magic bullet it’s just a tool for creative humans to embrace and unleash their vision,” wrote another user.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has confirmed a strategic workforce reduction, impacting about 4% of its global staff, according to reports.

This move aligns with the company's intensified focus on the artificial intelligence (AI) sector and comes amid a mixed financial performance in the third quarter of 2024. The decision, initially disclosed on message boards and subsequently validated by AMD, follows a wave of job cuts across the tech industry, including similar actions by competitor Intel Corporation, which has faced profitability challenges in recent quarters.

On platforms like Team Blind and The Layoff, employees shared firsthand accounts of the impact, with one user remarking that while the news was unexpected, the severance offered was "generous." 

As per reports, AMD confirmed the news, stating that the layoffs are part of a larger restructuring plan aimed at channelling resources into high-growth areas, particularly AI.

Despite an impressive 17% year-over-year increase in revenue and a 34% jump in profit during Q3, AMD's stock has taken a hit, dropping 13.6% since the earnings announcement.
